FOREWORD

Founder President of Umut Foundation

Education is expected to have an important role in our young people becoming influential and participating citizen.  Citizens who have adopted the values that should exist in a democratic society, aware of their rights and responsibilities, who own and see to the princşiples and values behind human rights, supremacy of law, state governed by the rule of law can be brought up by providing training opprtunities which give the necessary information and skills for these.

Whilst learning the methods of learning about  concepts such as law, justice, responsibility, crime, punishment as well as human rights, democratic values, fundamental democratic organizations, the limitations of  rights and freedoms, being aware of rights and the ways to protect them they should also gain knowledge of the methods of becoming people who know their responsibilities as a more active citizen, who respect the supremacy of law but can work in collaboration in order to improve the justice system.
Umut Raising Honorable Leaders Foundation, as a non-governmental organization aiming to raise young people with the above values is aware of its responsibility in this matter. Therefore, it was only natural that Umut Foundation has added a book for second grade students which covers mainly human rights, basic freedom respecting these and a parallel Trainer’s Handbook to the skill-gaining activities it has been initiating in line with its aim “to raise young people who have internalized the supremacy of law, who support peace not violence” (e.g. group workshops on conflict resolution, reconciliation and mediation)

How nice it is to make our young people become aware of the necessity of being a citizen and support them in gaining the necessary skills to become an active citizen.
