The next ten years starting from 1995 have been declared by Unesco as the years of “Tolerance /hosgoru)”. In fact, we should think of tolerance, which should be kept alive at all time as part of our whole life. I found it necessary to discuss the meaning of tolerance in detail as I was reading out the title of our topic today “What should we not tolerate, what should we not neglect in order to live in a clean and peaceful society?”.

According to Meydan Larousse encyclopedia the word “hoş” is described as indulges feelings  and the word “hoşgörü” is described as –being patient towards people the opinions they defend and the feelings they express are in conflict with ours.
Turkish Language Institute has briefly explained it as “tolerance”.

The fact that we should adopt a more harmonic line of conduct with tolerance among individuals and social groups in order to become more socially and culturally integrated is an indisputable reality.

Here we should not take tolerance as ignorance. Tolerance is not saying “who cares”, “never mind”; we be tolerant about the things we complain about - and that is what’s in contradiction with others- , in that case we would not come to the point of tolerating and doing nothing about it.

                           We may complain about the family;
                           We may complain about the neighbor;
                           We may complain about the teacher;
                           We may complain about the state;
                           We may complain about the lessons.

In that case are we going to be tolerant and say never mind or are going to do what’s our duty with tolerance- duties of being a citizen and a human being.

Now this is being tolerant but constructive, corrective, working heard leaving in peace and in integrity.

I still think that you should learn your rights and the rights of the other party and then protect your rights, that is also protecting the rights of the other party. Do this with tolerance and love. Invest in love. Love is like money being deposited in the same account. If you spend money from your account and you don’t replace it, it runs out, so does love. Give and take love, make an effort. With tolerance but never ignorance.

As a clean citizen living in a clean and peaceful society the love and respect you give to the others and the effort you make for them is equally yours.

This means we should both take and give in order to become a clean citizen and a clean society.
