Individual Disarmament and Violence News Diyarbakir in Turkey Local Media Seminar

In Diyarbakır at the Dedeman Hotel.
The Umut Foundation has started Local Media Training sessions entitled “Individual Disarmament and Violence News” in order to ensure the fourth force media be objective and critical in compliance with occupational requirements while reflecting, starting from local, violence news and violent incidents that occur due to individual armament to the society.
The first of the trainings were realized on 27 June 2007, Wednesday in Diyarbakır Dedeman Hotel. The training in which all media members from Diyarbakır, Şanlıurfa, Adıyaman, Muş, Bitlis, Elazığ, Bingöl, Siirt and Batman participated lasted for one day.
The first training session, which was realized with worthy contributions of Netherlands Consulate General, started with the opening speech of Solicitor Fikret İlkiz, who is a member of the board of Umut Foundation and delivered the speech on behalf of Nazire Dedeman, Founder Chairman of Umut Foundation, who could not attend to the meeting due to illness.
In the first session carried out before noon, Psychiatrist Dr. Ayhan Akcan, a member of the board of Umut Foundation, spoke about “Turkey with regard to Individual Armament: What Situation are we in from a Social Aspect? The Responsibility of the Media”; Don, Assist. Prof. Dr. Sevilay Çelenk, Faculty of Communications, Ankara University, spoke about “The effects of Violent News with Regard to Social Perception of Violence: The Affects of Violence News to the Society and Violence Journalism regarding Media Literacy: How are violence narrator journalists’ media literacy to be like as people who encounter violence very often? AndRagıp Duran, Don, Faculty of Communications, Galatasaray University spoke about “How Should We Present Violence News as Journalists? Good and Bad examples from Local and Mass Media (National and International)”. Journalists who participated in the training contributed with questions and views at the end of thefirst session.
The second session carried out afternoon started with the speech, heading “Violence in sport and Its Law” of Solicitor Fikret Ilkiz, the member of the board of Umut Foundation and Law Consultant of Turkish Journalist Committee (TJC), After, Dr. Recep Yaşar, a member of the board of TJC, spoke about “Journalism Ethical Principles and Declaration of Right and Liability of Turkish Journalists”.
The Local Media Training entitled “Individual Disarmament and Violence News in Turkey” ended with mutual discussions of participant journalists and trainers about “The Outlook of Local Media on Violence Journalism”.
