Board of Education and Discipline’s Teachers’ Seminar
It was decided that the ’’Democratic Citizen Training Project’’ put in effect by the Member Countries of the European Commission in 1997, the Training Committee Meeting of which took place in Strasbourg between September 16th and September 18th, 2000 and the Education Minister’s Meeting of which took place in Cracow, Poland between October 14th and 18th, 2004 will continue for the 2001-2004 period.
The planned national assignments related to the project are coordinated by the Board of Education and Discipline with the attendance of associated corporations and institutes. “Citizen Training Advisory Committee’’, to act as an advisory organ with the aim of implementing the project in our country was formed with the approval of the Ministry dated 14.07.2001.
Representatives of the Human Rights Presidency of the Prime Ministry, Human Rights Training Tenth Year National Committee, Higher Board of Education, Ankara University Pedagogic Faculty, METU’s EU Office, Gürkaynak Citizenship Institution of the Umut Foundation, White Point Foundation, Turkish Democracy Foundation, Philosophical Society of Turkey (Philosophy for Children Unit), Institute of Public Administration for Turkey and the Middle East, Human Rights Foundation of Turkey and Human Rights Institution of Turkey on duty in the Advisory Committee. Prof. Dr. İpek Gürkaynak, the Training Supervisor of our Commitee and our representatibve for the project continuously takes part in the Advisory Committee and sub-working group meetings.
As in all subject areas, the importance of educating a trainer skilled and equipped in the fields of Democracy, Human Rights and Citizenship training is known by all. As a result of the importance given to this matter by the Board of Education and Discipline, training was given to 25 trainers in Ankara in May and democratic citizenship seminars were held in Sinop Akliman between 29 July and 2 August for teachers invited from 81 provinces. The Umut Foundation trainers, who have been doing successful works related to this topic, were on duty during this seminar.
During the said seminars ’’To become a citizen...’’ student’s book and Trainer’s handbook were used as well as the documents and the materials provided for the use of the teachers.
In this context, 150 copies of ’’To become a citizen...’’ student’s book and ’’To become a citizen...’’ Trainer’s handbook were donated for the Board of Education and Discipline’s Teachers’ Seminar.
